The best website on "Herkimer Diamonds"
This site was last updated on August, 2010
Definitions and Scope:
Information and Mineral Sequence for Other Herkimer District Deposits I have heard that there are at least six other sites where Herkimer diamonds have been dug from the ground (not washed down in streams). If anyone has information about such a location that can be added to this dedicated Herkimer diamond mine information site, then please send an email. I even heard that there is a location near Amsterdam NY. Any Herkimer find East of Fonda would be of great importance! Please send an email. If you wish the location to remain private then we will do all we can to accomodate. The purpose of this website is to gather information from all the sites of mineralization within the Herkimer Mining District. The more sites that get added the more complete will be the picture of the entire district. If you want your location to remain totally private, then I would name the location "unknown", or give it a unique name of your choosing. It is the advancement of science that is important and the more sites that are studied the more we improve on the science.
A public service project always open to input from the community interested in Herkimer diamonds.

Hickory Hill Deposit (abreviation HHD)
"Hickory Hill is on Hickory Hill Road which starts on the east edge of Fonda off Rt. 5 across from Coal Yard. Up several miles to Martin Road. Stay on Hickory Hill. Site is on left about 1/2 mile past Martin. There is a swing gate nestled in among bushes. You can either pay $125/day for any number of people or go one of the summer holiday weekends Memorial, Fourth of July or Labor day. Fee last year (2007) was $5/day with free camping. Pit toilet, no showers. Bring your own Toilet paper for safety, they occasionally run out. Digging at this site is far easier than Ace of Diamonds or Herkimer Diamond Mines but quality on average is less. Harder to find really nice matrix pieces." More information will be added as it becomes available.

Turtle Clan Ridge (abbreviation TCR)
Turtle Clan Ridge is a privately owned Herkimer diamond location that has some features not obviously present at other deposits. Research is on going at this location and will be presented on this website.
Collecting at this location without permission of the owner is considered trespassing and you may be prosecuted. Per request of the owner, specific location information will not be provided. Specimens shown on this website from TCR are shown by permission of the mine owner. If you have a specimen, for an appropriate label - use Herkimer County, NY along with the mine name. ![]()
There are mines that do not produce much yearly, have limited access, or are under strict private ownership and have no public access. Yet every Herkimer mine in the district has its own story to tell. Often a mine will gives a piece of the story that we have never seen before. It is all important information.
Turtle Clan Ridge is a privately owned Herkimer diamond location and the owner has given permission for the research informtion to be shown on this website. TCR has features not obviously present at other deposits and the research has advanced our understanding of the Herkimer diamond mining district.
Hanson Middleville Quarry (abbreviation HMQ) Like the Hanson quarry in St. Johnsville this location is closed to the public. I have seen pyrite and clear Herkimer diamonds from here. I was also told that the mineral bearing zone is at the base, under 10 feet of very hard ledge. A very difficult location to work considering that quarry work no longer occurs (August, 2010). ![]() Diamond Hill (abbreviation DH) - Salisbury This is a location described in some older literature. I have no other information. Mentioning the site here does not equate with permission to dig. ![]() Big Nose and Little Nose (abbreviation BN and LN) - Canajoharie This location has been described to me by other collectors. I have been told that the site is remote and that quartz crystals have been seen lying on the ground, particularly under uprooted trees. Mentioning the site here does not equate with permission to dig. |
